Food for Thought

My African Violet showing off its color

Kelton had his check-up with the pediatric gastroenterologist yesterday. He'll be on the hypoallergenic formula until he's over 11 months old. At that point in time, he'll be sent to an allergy specialist for skin tests to determine if he still has the allergy or has developed any others. I'm a little skeptical on that. His milk protein allergy right now just gives him a royal tummy ache and some constipation. Most babies grow out of the allergy. So, why not give him a little dairy something and see if he gets a tummy ache? I'd rather him have one tummy ache than a series of skin tests that might involve needles. And, like Hubby pointed out, allergy specialists usually want to treat every allergy you have or might have or might be prone to having. I'm just suspicious of 99% of all doctors and don't take what they say as the final say-so. I digress. The doc handed us some paperwork on ingredients to stay away from in his diet in the meantime. It basically puts him on a dairy free and soy free diet. I was planning on making some good ole mashed taters this weekend to tempt his palate with, but what's mashed taters without butter and milk? I need to put my thinking cap on. Anybody have any ideas?

We still have to go buy a highchair. I went to Babies 'R Us last weekend to buy a chair no matter what. The selection defeated me and I left empty handed. Those things confound me. There are so many blasted options...3 reclining levels or 6? Should the foot rest be adjustable? Toys or no toys included? Collapsable to 4" or 6"? Do I really need that little basket on the back for storing "feeding utensils"? I thought that's what the kitchen drawers were for. This weekend is it, though...we're getting one! They also make these cool mesh feeding thingies. (real specific, huh?) You put food in the mesh bag and close the end and then give it to baby to suck the food through the mesh. This way they can "eat" stuff like fresh fruit without actually getting anything big enough to choke on. Here's a picture of a homemade mesh feeder made out of cheesecloth. They gave baby some honeydew melon (he's about 5 months old). Ever heard of Bunnicula? This reminds me of that. If not, then check out the Bunnicula books in the childrens' section of your favorite bookstore.

Recent stats on our little fella. He weighs 17 pounds and is 26.25" long. He can roll himself over now that he's figured out how to get his arm out from under him. He was on a binge of wanting to stand in your lap. You couldn't go to set him down without him locking his knees and "standing". He'd grin about it and do this wiggly baby dance. Well, I guess the fun wore off that, because now he "frogs" his legs under him and gets a kick out of having you pick him up in the air and bring him back down to your lap. And he's sticking his tongue out now! I tried to check for little toofies in his mouth this morning, but all I saw was a bunch of drool and a cute little pink tongue hanging out. He thought that was pretty funny! Here he is doing the Kelton-Cha-Cha...

For all my kids, I used a high chair that broke down into a chair and table. It was easy to clean and they used the table and chair far into their childhood. And we loved the mesh baggies. They worked great with pretty much everything, especially frozen fruit when teething hit. Aren't babies fun?!

Reagan had a milk protein allergy as well. She was on Alimentum until she was one year old. But at one year, instead of going through all of the tests (which are unreliable until they are three) we gave her a glass of milk. She was fine. We haven't had any other issues and haven't looked back.

I don't think you need all of the fancy crap with a high chair. Just get one that is easy to clean. We made the mistake of buying a cute but terribly impractical Eddie Bauer one and hated every minute she sat in it. Now we use a bumbo for Bailey until she can go into the booster type seat.

And amen for the mesh baggies. We used those to introduce new foods to Reagan early and she is an awesome eater today. She'll try anything!

I love the frozen fruit idea for teething!! And the more I think about taking K-man to an allergist, the more it bugs me. I think we'll do the same thing re: giving him something that's dairy and seeing how he does with it.

Thanks for comments!!
